A couple of days ago I posted the summary for the question about the
maximum number of fields in an AV32 ASCII TXT-table, and that I still
hadn't got a definite answer.

Bill Huber came up with a more sensible solution:

It occurred to me the limitation is not the number of fields, but the
total
length of field names, accounting for ArcView's penchant to truncate
names
to 10.  Including quotation marks and commas, I can feed it just a
header
record of just over 2^15 bytes, but no more.  I don't have the time to
track down all the details of the limitation, but this evidence should
point you in the right direction.  It also explains why you might get
different answers from different sources--the number of fields can vary
tremendously, depending on their lengths."
